England: DJ Russ Jones , The Hackney Globe Trotter

Around the World in 80 Ways was one of Russ -The Hackney Globetrotter- Jones' aptly named clubnights and for Russ - a firm lover of good sounds, funky eyewear and vintage Volkswagens - it is more like a way of life. Russ is behind some of London's most successful clubs including London Calling and No Room for Squares in the mid 90s. Guest deejays included, Gilles Peterson, James Lavelle, Fabio, Bukem & Norman Jay. Later on he moved London Calling to the infamous Blue Note and subsequently became the Artistic Director of the infamous venue.

Around the same time he also helped to set up the celebrated Brazilian record label 'Far Out Recordings' with DJ/producer Joe Davis and worked with acts like Marcos Valle, Joyce, Four Hero and Roni Size.

Fast-forward to the middle of the first decade of the 21st Century and Russ is becoming one of the leading djs on 'global beat' scene. From his seminal club night Future World Funk he has gone on to compile over 13 celebrated compilation CDs including two volumes of Gypsy Beats and Balkan Bangers which received props from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Huw Stevens, Mary Anne Hobbs and Osun Lade and now a follow up with a twist - Arriba La Cumbia - The new sounds of cumbia from around the world which is also now running as a very successful monthly club night highlighting the best in live cumbia/tropical bands and with guest djs from around the world.

Always championing new music Russ also had a hand in singing Panjabi MC for his world-wide hit single Mundian To Bach Ke which lead to the Bhangra phenomenon crossing over to many a dancefloor.  DJing has literally taken Russ all over the world from Beijing to El Salvador, Moscow, New York, Singapore, Japan, Australia, 30,000 people in Gran Canaria and all across Europe. Festivals are always a favourite and Russ has hosted, programmed stages and played at Glastonbury, Bestival, Montreaux, Womad, Big Chill, Womadelaide, Love Box, V, Chicago World Music Festival and his beloved local festival Stokefest to name a few. He also has a few remixes under his belt including work for Bollywood Brass Band, Mahalia Rai Banda, Zulu 9.30 and Ska Cubano. Over the last year he has been hosting his own radio show at OpenAir.FM/HGT and recently made Time Out London's podcast of the week. In the huge amount of spare time that Russ has he likes to admire his glasses collection, ride bicycles, polish his car and sleep.

The Hackney Globetrotter aka DJ Russ Jones is one of the leading lights of the ever growing international 'global beats' music scene. He created Future World Funk a project with DJ Cliffy that had CD sales of over 80'000. He has now moved onto his solo project Hackney Globe Trotter. He has produced over 13 compilations, djed in over 40 countries and headlined festivals like Womad, Glastonbury, Bestival, Roslkilde and Love Box. He currently has a monthly HGT residency at London's Notting Hill Arts Club. In his weekly show on OpenAir, Russ Jones plays a world beat mix up, covering everything from Cumbia to Soukous, gypsy , latin hip hop, reggaeton, dubstep, raverton, afro beats, vintage classics and beyond.
