Radio Groovalizacion: Cumbia Rising

It’s the missing link between upbeat salsa tempos and slow-paced reggae rhythms. The simple and infectious groove of Cumbia has greatly evolved from the original indigenous flutes to the synthesizers of current electro music producers but still retains its typical pulse built around low drums and raspy shakers in a distinctive slow train pattern. For this new documentary, Groovalizacion met with some artists, DJs, promoters and label owners to get to know more about the genre. They tell us about the history and cultural roots of cumbia, their idea of cumbia, how this music spread across South America and how it is now winning over North America and Europe in both its traditional and most experimental forms.

Documentary in English made by Groovalizacion for Radio Hemisphere of the World Culture festival in Dublin.
