Hot, dusty Valledupar fills with the sound of paseo, merengue, puya and son music every April. Alongside the superbly popular Musica Vallenata, there are also three main folklore contests at the Festival of the Vallenata Legenda and competition is stiff.
The Conjunto Tipico de musica vallenata contest seeks out the best accordionist of the year. Vallenato has its own rhythm and sound, characterised by the accordion and a percussion instrument called a guacharaca. The music has developed over the past 50 years, becoming a favourite of the laid-back people of the Caribbean coast and the whole of Colombia.
Each year musicians from all over the country descend on Valledupar to do battle for the crown of the Vallenato King.
